Recommended orientation is vertical on either side, or horizontal with the Device Electronics board down; other mounting orientations may be used. No matter what mounting orientation is used, Micropolis specifies that the maximum HDA casting temperature not exceed 60*C (140*F). Mounting Screws --------------- 2 per side 6-32 UNC-2B 4 on bottom 6-32 UNC-2B Caution: The mounting screws must be selected so that they do not penetrate the bottom mounting holes by more than 0.20 inches or the side mounting holes by more than 0.156 inches. Screws that are too long may short to PCBA components. Interface Electrical Characteristics ------------------------------------ Interface control and status signals, using SCSI-3 Fast-20 compliant transmitters and receivers which provide a terminated, single-ended system. Single-ended drivers and receivers allow a maximum cable length of 3 meters for up to four devices and a maximum cable length of 1.5 meters for greater that four devices. Signal transmission requires a single 50-conductor (flat or twisted-pair) cable. A characteristic impedance of 90 ( 6) ohms is recommended. a. Input Characteristics Each of the drive's signal receivers has the following characteristics when measured at the interface connector. 1) Low-level input voltage = (Signal true) 0.0 VDC to 1.0 VDC 2) High-level input voltage = (Signal false) 1.9 VDC to 5.25 VDC 3) Low-level input current = 20 microamps at 0.5 VDC 4) High-level input current = 20 microamps at 2.7 VDC 5) Minimum input hysteresis = 0.3 VDC 6) Maximum input capacitance = 25 pF b. Output Characteristics Each driven signal has the following characteristics when measured at the interface connector. 1) Low-level input voltage = 0.0 VDC to 0.5 VDC (signal assertion) 2) High-level input voltage = 2.5 VDC to 3.7 VDC (signal negation) 3) Minimum driver output capability = 48 milliamps (sink) at 0.5VDC c. Terminator Power (TERMPWR at Pin 26) Terminator Power has the following requirements: V(TERM) = 4.25 VDC to 5.25 VDC 800 milliamps minimum source drive capability, with 1.0 amp recommended current limiting (e.g., a fuse). 1.0-milliamp maximum bus loading (except for the purposes of providing power to an internal terminator). Keyed connectors are provided to prevent accidental grounding or misconnection of terminator power. Signal Connector J1 ------------------- J1 is a 50-pin connector. The signals on J1 include the 8-bit SCSI bus and various control and handshaking lines. Recommended Cable: 3M Scotchflex 3801/50 or equivalent. Mating connector: 3M P/N 3425-3000 or equivalent. J1A Power Connector ------------------- J1A is a 4-pin connector used to supply +5V and +12V to the drive. Recommended mating connector: AMP 1-480424-0 or equivalent Pins: AMP 350078-4 Suggested wire size: 18 AWG (minimum) for all pins. pin 1 +12 VDC pin 2 +12 Volts Return pin 3 + 5 Volts Return pin 4 + 5 VDC 2-pin Connectors (Remote LED, etc.) ----------------------------------- Recommended mating connector: Berg 69305-002 or equivalent Pins: Berg 77138-001 Suggested wire size: 26-30 AWG for all pins SCSI ID Connector (6-pin) ------------------------- Recommended mating connector: Berg 90311-006 or equivalent Pins: Berg 77138-001 Suggested wire size: 26-30 AWG for all pins 36-Pin Option Connector ----------------------- Recommended mating connector: Berg 90311-036 or equivalent Pins: Berg 77138-001 Suggested wire size: 26-30 AWG for all pins Multiple-Drive Systems ---------------------- Drive #1 +------HOST------+ +-----------------+ | +-----------+ +--+-SCSI-BUS-----+ J1 | | |Terminators| | | +------+ J1A | | +-----------+ | | | +-----------------+ | | | | +----------------+ | | Drive #2 | | +-----------------+ +-------+------+ J1 | | o------+ J1A | | | +-----------------+ | | | | Drive #3 | | +-----------------+ +-------+------+ J1 | | o------+ J1A | | | +-----------------+ | | | | Drive #4 | | +--------------+--+ +-------+------+ J1 |T | o------+ J1A +--+ ---DC-VOLTAGES-----+ +-----------------+ T = TERMINATORS Terminators are installed ONLY in the last physical drive in the control chain. Temperature Measurement ----------------------- Micropolis specifies the maximum HDA casting temperature to be 60*C (140*F). Not exceeding this temperature will ensure that the head-to-media interface never exceeds its temperature limit. In order to achieve the HDA casting temperature specified above, forced air flow, around the HDA and Device Electronics board, may be required. For recommended air-flow cooling, refer to the following table: Air Temperature | Air Flow - LFPM* ------------------+------------------ 25*C (77*F) | 180 ------------------+------------------ 50*C (122*F) | 220 * = Linear Feet Per Minute ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** MICROPL. 3391 TOMAHAWK PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 110943 REV. B 1996 Description ----------- This Product Description describes the Micropolis model 3391NS (Ultra SCSI, Narrow, single-ended) Rigid Disk Drive. The drive is a member of the TOMAHAWK family of high-performance, 3 1/2-inch, full-height Rigid Disk Drives. The drive is compatible with the "ANSI CCS" version and the "SCSI-3" version of the industry-standard Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) specification. This drive provides OEMs with random-access, high-speed, data storage and meet the needs of diverse applications environments. Some Features of the Drive -------------------------- - Positive media protection is achieved during spin down (due to a STOP UNIT command or power off) by automatically retracting and locking the positioner in a data-free landing zone. - N-Segment Read-Ahead algorithm improves read performance by allowing many accesses to be serviced from the 512K cache buffer. - In-Line Defect Management (sector slipping) provides maximum throughput. - Data Integrity is ensured with CRC through the buffer, state-of- the-art ECC on-the-fly, and automatic retries using servo and data strobe offsets. Media Defects ------------- Media defects are physical characteristics of the media which result in repetitive read errors when a functional drive is operated within specified operating conditions. At the time of manufacture, a media test system evaluates every drive and identifies each media defect location. The defective areas are identified by head address (HD) and cylinder address (CYL). The list of manufacturer-found defects is stored on the drive in a reserved, write-protected area accessible by the SCSI controller. This list is known as the MDL (Manufacturers Defect List) or PList (Primary Defect List). All the MDL entries are automatically mapped out (reassigned) by the manufacturing process prior to the shipment. Seek Time --------- | 3391NS | ----------------------------------+--------+ Track-to-Track msec. typ. | 1 | Average msec. typ. | 7.9 | Maximum msec. | 19.0 | Latency msec. avg. | 4.17 | ----------------------------------+--------+ Recording Media --------------- Aluminium disks, each 95 millimeters (3 1/2 inches) in diameter, are mounted on the spindle assembly. The recording surface on each disk is a thin coating of magnetic material, with a carbon over-coat to protect it. Air Filtration System --------------------- The drives are designed to provide contamination control within the HDA throughout the life of the drive with zero maintenance. Air within the HDA is continuously recirculated and filtered through a high efficiency filter. A breather filter protects the HDA from from inward contamination migration during air pressure changes associated with drive temperature or atmospheric pressure variations. Braking ------- The heads contact an area of the disk surface which is not used for data storage when the disk are not spinning and during start and stop cycles. Dynamic braking is used to stop the spindle quickly. SCAM Compliance --------------- The drive is Level 1 SCAM (SCSI Configured AutoMatically) compliant in Microsoft Windows 95 plug-and-play environments. Drive installation and configuration tasks are handled without any user intervention; i.e., plug the drive in, turn the system on, and it works. (Future capability)
